The first time we saw the E82 back in 2007, we immediately realized that it was miles ahead both dynamically and aesthetically from the boring and anonymous hatchback from which the coupe was derived. At four years old, it’s relatively good looking, and the 135i versions is still winning awards for its performance.
Rumor has it that the 1er coupe and convertible will be moved to the 2-Series name, and we’re dreading the change. But, according to an egmCarTech exclusive interview with a top BMW M exec for the North American market, the E82 will soldier on for a couple more years, at least in the US.
“So far, the 1-Series five-door hatchback was redesigned for Europe and is currently on sale. As for the 1-Series coupe and convertible, they’ll continue in the US in their current form as we know them for another one to two model years,” said BMW M-Division’s product manager for North America, Matt Russell. “We consider them to be in the middle of their life cycle, so because the 1-Series coupe and convertible are a ways away from being redesigned in the U.S.”
