Dale Earnhardt is one of the biggest names in American motorsport. With a total of 76 Winston Cup races won, including the famous Daytona 500, and seven championships to his name, Earnhardt is one of the NASCAR titans, so anything he owned and touched has the potential of earning big bucks.
Richard Childress is one of the men Earnhardt raced for back in his glory days, and the team owner is also in possession of an impressive collection of race cars. Among them is the No. 3 Chevrolet Earnhardt raced back in the day.
During the Barrett-Jackson online auction being held next month, Childress will be parting ways with this car, the first time he is letting go of an “original Earnhardt car from his collection.” Bidding for the vehicle will kick off on May 8 and will end about a week later, on May 16. All the money raised this way will be donated to relief efforts for the current health crisis.
“I’ve grown my personal collection of memorabilia throughout my career in NASCAR and have especially enjoyed the Dale Earnhardt cars in my collection because they each have such a unique history that bring back priceless memories of my years winning and racing with Dale,” said Childress in a statement.
“I’ve never parted with an Earnhardt Chevrolet from my collection, but with a global pandemic taking place and people in our communities suffering, it’s time to do what I can to help."
This particular car was driven by Earnhardt on tracks in Bristol, Dover, Rockingham, and Darlington between 1996 and 1999. The vehicle has only won one race, at Rockingham Speedway in 1996, but it never finished worse than fourth.
Separately, Childress is also selling off a memorabilia collection that also includes pre-production models of diecasts, some that were never made. This collection is selling on eBay.
