I think everybody will agree that the apocalyptic movie "2012" is among the worst ever made, not helped at all by the acting of John Cusack.
But I did like the beginning of the movie, where the hero races across Los Angeles in an old limo as the roads begin to crumble, swallowing every car and building in sight. That's the first thing I thought about when I saw the following LiveLeak video, showing a car being swallowed up by a sinkhole in China.

In 2009, when the movie came out, cars being swallowed up by the road were a rare thing, so at least the moviemakers had that going. Unfortunately, it's happening more and more often these days, as we see such footage from Russia on an almost weekly basis.

Is Satan demanding a human sacrifices, or has Mother Earth had enough of our silly asphalt ribbons? Far from it. In fact, the actual explanation is boring and involves a combination of badly made roads, rain water eroding the soil and a vehicle that probably exceeds the maximum weight limit.

We have no idea what that white sedan is, probably a locally made Toyota Corolla. One thing is fore sure, this sinkhole didn't swallow any Corvettes. While the driver failed to see that the asphalt had given way, luck was on his side. The video shows that the nose of the car wedged against the edge of the hole, gaving him just enough time to exit the vehicle safely.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
