Since EVs have additional safety concerns, as opposed to regular cars, the Chinese Automotive Engineering Research Institute is hard at work for new national standards for such vehicles. At the moment, they are working on developing specific crash test scenarios, ones which better suit the different requirements of EVs.
Their main areas of concern are the danger of battery combustion, the powerful electrical currents with which EVs operate, the effect of the additional weight of the batteries, as well as the effect of battery radiation, which reportedly is quite harmful. Work on the program is now well underway, and it should be finalized by 2014.

This, along with the new standards for Chinese cars destined for export mean that the country’s image regarding all things automotive will only improve in coming years - very bad news, even for the big players on the automotive stage of the world, and very good news for China.
