General Motors recently said through Mark Reuss that the now-defunct Chevy Camaro could one day return as an electric vehicle - the independent artists say, 'Bring it on – we've been at it for years.'
The rumor mill has gone berserk about a recent interview with the corner office head honcho, who discusses the newly and dearly departed pony car, among other things. The GM guru didn't forget to take a shot at Ford's Mustang Mach-E, which is still not profitable or loved by fans, but then he also revealed that Chevy's Camaro could return at one point in the near future as a passenger car rather than a crossover (abomination).
That's good news, some might say – but a big no-no for the few diehard Camaro fans that are left around. The key takeaway from the Mach-E parallel is simple – Blue Oval enthusiasts have a choice: go with the crossover EV, or if they want a V8, they have the Mustang GT and Dark Horse still horsing around, pun fully intended.
Chevrolet aficionados have no such 500 hp and manual transmission luxury, so many of them would say they'd rather see the Camaro as a past icon than relegate it to a position of another Tesla knock-off failure. After all, if GM doesn't go down the Ford Mustang Mach-E versus Tesla Model Y route, they will have to offer something that's on par with the Tesla Model 3 in return. A Chevy Camaro EV will likely become a sedan and thus provide an alternative to the Model 3 and the Dodge Charger Daytona.
However, irrespective of fan opposition, it turns out that the rumor mill and the imaginative realm of digital car content creators have locked the whole Chevy Camaro EV idea in position for months. For example, Marouane Bembli, a virtual artist better known as TheSketchMonkey on YouTube, was keen on unofficially bringing to CGI life the zero emissions sedan years ago. Here, check out his behind-the-scenes making-of video embedded below.
Funny enough, as it translates to our discussion just right, the first comment on the subject of the 'future' Chevy Camaro EV was exactly to the point: "Porsche gets it. They stick to their (ICE) engines and will offer EVs too." As in, you have the Taycan as an all-electric and the Panamera with ICE powertrains and only as a PHEV if you really want electrification. Also, the 911 is now a hybrid but a performance-oriented one.
Additionally, we also found a more recent vision of the electric Chevy Camaro courtesy of Ray Ochoa, the virtual artist behind rayo.designlab on social media – he fell in love with the Rivian R2 and R3 and that allowed him to dream of a Chevy Camaro (plus a Tesla) inspired by them. At least his vision keeps the 'Maro with just two doors, as per tradition.
