Chavez Orders Autoseat de Venezuela Takeover

The 21st century revolution of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez continues in 2010, with the announcement that the Autoseat de Venezuela business, abandoned by its owners in 2008, will be expropriated and handed over to its workers.

The decision, as dictatorial as it may seem, will actually allow workers to keep their jobs in making car seats, paneling and doors for cars. This after in 2008 the former management left for the great unknown, following a closing attempt, leaving the 290 workers without work and without pay. As you might expect, the workers are pleased with the decision.

"They left us in the street ... the only option they gave us was to resign and take 25% of benefits ... it's a year since we received wages," Autoseat union general secretary, Elia Morillo told vheadline.com.

The expropriation is seen as a small step towards the elimination of foreign automotive businesses in Venezuela and the beginning of private-government joint ventures in the industry.  Chavez also lashed out, during a broadcast on national radio and television, at Fedecamaras (Federacion de Camaras y Asociaciones de Comercio y Produccion), the country's main private business association, which comprises several automotive businesses in the country.

Chavez declared Fedecamaras "one of the greatest obstacles to the development of the country," after the organization requested the government to change the economic policy which destroys the productive apparatus (read give up expropriations).

“Big business of Fedecamaras members represent the most parasitic and monopolistic colonial form of capitalism, so his Government would not go with them even to church,” Chavez said during the broadcast. "Enemies of the homeland I declare them!”
