Good news, Golden State motorists! Assemblyman Mike Gatto successfully passed a bill that allows the DMV to rollout vintage black-and-yellow vehicle license plates that adorned American muscle from '63 through '69.
According to a statement from Gatto's office, "the black plates were among the fastest specialty plates ever to achieve the 7,500 applications necessary to be issued.” There's no special requirement for your own car or motorcycle to benefit from these legacy plates.
The only thing you need to do is fill a DMV pre-order form, pay $50 and wait patiently a few months for the press machine to start making them. The program also includes reprinting yellow background and black text 1950s plates as well 1970s blue-and-yellow plates, but only if applications surpass the 7,500 mark until January 1st, 2015.
“This is an easy way for the state to enable everyone from the backyard restorer, to the nostalgic, to the purchaser of a retro-styled automobile to add that extra bit of detail for those of us who appreciate the classic era of automobile design,” assemblyman Gatto declared about the California Legacy License Plate Program.
Fun fact: these plates will be slightly thicker than contemporary ones due to the fact that original molds will be used by the press machine. Head on over to DMV's dedicated page to find out more about this program.
