Cadillac Intends to Build Rival for BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Klasse

Cadillac intends to build a rear-wheel drive luxury sedan on a completely new platform, and the name of this new addition will probably be Omega, if we are to trust the latest report from Car and Driver.

For years Cadillac’s Sixteen concept represented a statement of what the American automaker is capable of creating, but unfortunately since its introduction back in 2003, the model remained just a concept.

According to the aforementioned publication, it now seems that Cadillac is serious about building a flagship model of their own in order to create a direct rival for top limousines such as BMW’s 7-Series and Mercedes’ S-Klasse. At this point, it is uncertain if the new model will have anything in common with the Sixteen concept.

The new car will probably feature a six or eight-cylinder engine, as well as all-wheel drive as optional. In addition to the gasoline power plants, the model will have a hybrid version and later on, a diesel one. The debut date for the new luxury sedan powered by gasoline engines is set for 2014, when the model will be presented as a 2015 model.

In order to be a serious contender for the limousine segment, the automobile’s engine won’t do the trick alone, as safety and comfort technology, as well as interior design, features and comfort represent a must.

Rumor has it that General Motors have even bigger plans for the Omega's platform, such as designing a very luxurious and cutting edge technology packed limousine meant to rival Rolls-Royce’s Phantom model.

The engine in the Sixteen concept is a V16 power plant featuring 13,600 cc, enough to allow the unit to develop 1,000 hp (745 kW) and a maximum torque level of 1000 lb-ft (1,355 Nm) at 4,000 rpm.

The engine represents an astonishing achievement, but it is highly unlikely that the Sixteen concept power plant to be fitted onto the Omega model.
