Brawn GP to Push for Button Extension

Brawn GP's CEO Nick Fry revealed that the Brackley based team will pull all the right strings in order to extend the contract of Jenson Button before the end of the season. Winner of 5 grand prix this season, the Briton is currently leading the overall classification by a massive 16 points to second placed Rubens Barrichello. However, as revealed by Fry, Button only signed a one-year deal with Honda at the end of last season.

It seems the Briton had a chance to ink an impressive multi-million dollar deal with the Japanese manufacturer before it decided to pull out of the sport, but instead preferred to take it one year at a time with Honda. In the meantime, the car maker withdrew from the sport, while Button also proceeded to cutting his salary in half in order to bring one further financial aid to the then-struggling Brackley team.

Being “on top of the world” after winning 5 out of 6 races this season, Button is likely to renew his deal with Brawn GP, as revealed by Fry himself. Not only will Brawn GP push for a renewal of his 2009 deal, but Fry also made it very clear that his team wants Button until the end of his F1 deal.

My objective and our objective is to have him for the rest of his career. Nothing's changed on that front. I think it's mutual that he would like to stay with the team. After the performance - five race wins – we should be able to get something together,” said Fry, at the end of another winning weekend in Monaco.

Although he admitted Button's contractual rates have certainly gone up as a result of his extraordinary season so far, Fry revealed Brawn GP might soon afford to keep the Briton thanks to a series of lucrative sponsorship deals to be signed.

I'm sure he will be sitting there with his people and they're thinking that his price is going up the whole time. But maybe the sponsorship for the team is going up too, so maybe we can afford it,” added the team's CEO.
