If you're into movies, you might have heard something about a new Formula 1 movie in the works a while back. And not just any movie, but a star-studded one written, produced, and directed by the movie industry's greats.
It's been two years since we first learned about the movie. We heard back then it was to star Brad Pitt playing a retired racing driver who is forced back on the track to compete, aided by a rookie, against Formula 1's greatest. We don't know who is forcing the man to do that, or why.
In the time that has passed since that first announcement we didn't learn much else about the movie itself. The thing doesn't even have a title at the time of writing, and there is no trailer that could shed some light into what to expect.
But despite this, the studio behind the movie, Apple Original Films, announced this week that the flick will be in cinemas worldwide on June 25 and in America on June 27, and with these dates came a few more interesting details about it.
The unnamed, mysterious movie is made in partnership with Formula 1 and is produced by three companies, namely Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Plan B Entertainment, and Dawn Apollo Films. The latter group is owned by none other than seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Aside from Brad Pitt the movie also stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia, and Samson Kayo. The director is Joseph Kosinski, a name you may be familiar with from Top Gun: Maverick, while the script is the work of Ehren Kruger, also involved with the second instalment of Top Gun.
Idris plays Pitt’s teammate in a fictional racing team called APXGP. That's not something we haven’t seen before, but this movie promises to be something else entirely, as it has been shot "during actual Grand Prix weekends” at races on the sport's calendar. It's unclear exactly what that means in terms of locations, but at least we should get a close-up view of the exhilarating and cinematic world of F1.
Knowing all of the above means you should keep your eyes open over the next few hours (or perhaps days), as it is only a matter of time until the trailer drops. I can't wait to have a look at it, as at least on paper this flick looks a different kind of exciting than what Netflix is doing with its Formula 1 documentaries.
In the meantime, Formula 1 itself published a photo of Pitt in racing overalls, and gave us a glimpse at how the race cars look in the movie, but also who the fictional team's sponsors are. Check the gallery for more on that.
