BMW Wants Sequential Turbo V6 for Next M3?

The engine jigsaw puzzle 1 photo

As you might already know, BMW has a hard job at hand when it comes to deciding on an engine for the next M3 and the M4 that will follow it. There’s talk of the F80 model being tested with for different engines, including straight-six, biturbo V8 and even a V6 Engine Based on the S63.
For a while we’ve been rooting for the straight six to make a comeback, but it looks like BMW has other plans, as the automaker has made a patent application for the V6, according to Bimmerpost. The schematics for the unit reveal what we’ve always been curious about - the number of turbos. Exhaust gasses from all six cylinders go directly to one big turbo, after which they can be redirected to either a second turbo or to the exhaust system.

This doesn’t mean that the engine has been decided upon, but it gives a lot of credit to the rumors of a V6 M3. Who know where the magical third electric turbo is going to go?
