BMW automobiles make look all mean on the road, but sometimes these Bavarian creations have... a happy little elephant hidden inside them. We’re not joking here - as you can see in the image above, there’s a BMW circuit board with an elephant holding the roundel engraved.
The image showed up on Reddit, with the user who posted it being just as surprised as we are. This could be taken from the instrument cluster of an E39 BMW 5-Series, one of the most praised generations of the German mid-size sedan.

OK, but why would there be such an Easter egg?

As it turns out, it’s not all that unusual for board designers to mark their products in unusual ways like this. Similar cases have been reported on all sorts of electronic equipment, from scanners to TVs. Moreover, the elephant could be the commercial name for the software or source code used here.

Aside from the obvious “inside joke” appeal of the move, there doesn’t seem to be any reason for it. The user has taken a a few pics of the oddity, so you can get a clear view on the matter. Oh well, at least the elephant that’s holding the BMW logo in his trunk looks extremely pleased.

Come to think of it, we may have found a use for this. From now on, if anybody states a certain BMW model is too heavy, and there has been more than one case, you can just tell them it’s all the fault of the elephant. Which, of course, is not in the room, but inside the dashboard.

On a more serious note, feel free to give us your own explanation for this in the comments section below.
