Taking its name from the Neue Klasse coupes and sedans from the 1960s and 1970s, the modern-day Neue Klasse is a platform developed specifically for battery-electric applications. BMW intends to launch the first model based on said architecture next year in the form of the all-new iX3.
The all-new part is literal rather than figurative, for the second-gen iX3 is a different animal from the outgoing model. Twinned with the combustion-engined X3 on the CLAR platform, the first-gen iX3 is a made-in-China affair with rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, poor driving range, no frunk, and a relatively high starting price in both China and Europe. It's no wonder BMW didn't bring it to the USA.

In the span of 24 months after launching the first Neue Klasse model, the Bavarian automaker will introduce no fewer than five other electric vehicles, beginning with the NA0 i3 Sedan and NA1 i3 Touring. The NA7 iX4 is due in 2026, whereas the iX3 M – or whatever is going to be called – is reportedly codenamed ZA5.

The Z prefix will apply to the iX4 M (ZA7), the first electric M3 Sedan (ZA0), and the first electric M3 Touring (ZA1). BMW let it slip that it's targeting a whole megawatt from a quad-motor powertrain for the Neue Klasse. That's 1,000 kilowatts or 1,341 horsepower, which is absolutely insane compared to the current-gen M3 Competition xDrive and the M5 PHEV.

Even though BMW hasn't said anything in regard to a convertible underpinned by this BEV-centric architecture, pixel meister Ascariss Design took the liberty of imagining one. It goes without saying that he used the Vision Neue Klasse concept as the starting point for his design.

The pixel artist made plenty of changes to BMW's 3 Series-sized sedan concept, starting with the doors. He also moved the A pillars and front windshield a bit to the front to make room for two large doors. A few changes to the front and rear ends, together with conventional mirrors instead of cameras, also need to be highlighted.

All in all, it's a pretty interesting "what if" that BMW might one day take influence from. But alas, we currently don't know if a cabriolet will ever be produced on the Neue Klasse platform. Be that as it may, there is a rumor one cannot ignore. According to Bimmerpost's brigadier general ynguldyn, the i4 should enter series production in the second half of 2028 under two codenames: NA2 for the coupe and NA3 for the cabriolet.

With the second half of 2028 being four years away, BMW could very well cancel the i4 Convertible before it reaches production. Thankfully, the G23 shouldn't be taken out of production until 2028. This means that prospective customers of the 4 Series Convertible still have four years to pick up a brand-new one, be it a diesel, a four-cylinder turbo, a single-turbo sixer, or the M4.
