The Germans from BMW are the makers of one of the most successful electric cars currently on the market. Their i3 hatchback has been around for seven years now, and this important nameplate in the BMW portfolio has kept going down paths the carmaker hasn’t been on before.
i3’s loneliness on the electric Bimmers for the masses segment will end this year, when the iX3 will be making its entrance. The electric SUV, BMW’s first, is set to start deliveries by the end of the year, and not even a global health crisis can stop it.

The Bavarians announced this week that homologation testing for the electric SUV have ended and the results were submitted to authorities. In the last month alone, despite the lockdowns still in place here and there, 7,700 km (4,780 miles) of road tests have been conducted. Since the development of the vehicle began, the carmaker built 200 test iX3s and put them through their paces in the harshest of conditions.

Based on the X3, BMW’s electric SUV would be built in China by BMW Brilliance Automotive for the global markets.

“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production vehicles and will launch standard production in late summer, using state-of-the-art technologies such as custom installation of the new high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence for monitoring parts,” said in a statement Robert Küssel, BBA Plant Director Dadong.

“We are also producing the fully-electric BMW iX3 and the BMW X3 with combustion engine on the same production line. This enables us to achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production.”

Fitted with the fifth-generation eDrive technology – which would also be deployed on the upcoming i4 and iNext – and a new-to-market battery, the iX3 should have a range of 440 km (273 miles).

The launch of the model is expected in the coming months.
