Most people that claim BMW is just a greedy German company that uses extensive marketing tools to overprice their cars, also think that M cars are nothing else but stock cars with new bumpers and more power.
Nothing was ever more wrong. In a recent interview for Auto Express, BMW's Klaus Froehlich, Senior Vice President Brand and Product Strategies said that the new M4, for example, uses 80% different parts from the stock 4er.
Furthermore, the new high-performance coupe will be using a bespoke version of BMW's new modular engine, a completely new suspension and the 7-speed DCT gearbox.
The emphasize on weight was never more important. For example, even though the standard 4 Series was developed for the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the M4 will be using a different chassis, with rear-wheel-drive, because sending the power to all four corners of the car might make it too heavy.
