Currently, it is a well-known fact that BMW's modern design is a little… wacky, to say the least. It's also quite different across the board if you think about models like the M2, M3 and M4, 7 Series, or XM.
Recently, they started tying up the knots a little bit with the all-new 5 Series and X2, for example. They're still mildly controversial, but at least you'll recognize them a lot more efficiently in a crowd. Speaking of the 5 Series, which was initially presented in all-electric i5 and ICE-powered sedan form, its other body style – the five-door station wagon, is one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry.

Our spy photographer partners have caught prototypes of the i5 and M5 Touring just about everywhere. The rumor mill has caught wind that BMW M decided to allow the high-performance station wagon to make the trip to North America alongside the M5 sedan, and patent drawings have spilled the beans on the 5 Series Touring design since October.

Well, the end of speculation is drawing near. As confirmed, there will be a Touring variant of the successful M model for the first time since 2007, and the "perfect symbiosis of M typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance" soon. As we speak, there is a countdown on BMW M's YouTube channel for 'The M List.' Indeed, Santa is making a list and checking it twice, and then he's also "coming to M Town."

Because "sometimes the best presents won't fit under the tree," BMW might be preparing for a soft reveal of the M5 Touring – it's not wrapped in thick layers of camouflage but rather tucked with a golden ribbon and featuring cheerful Christmas holiday decals. At the time of writing, we only have the imagery of Santa in front of the M Town's garage and the rear of the M5 Touring, plus the countdown – so we don't know if BMW is officially spilling the beans on everything or if they're just trying to cheer us up with a cool teaser.

However, we are prepared for everything, including an impromptu presentation of the M5 Touring ahead of its M5 sedan sibling! That would be cool and would certainly put an end to the endless speculation about what's hiding under the hood – most likely the ubiquitous V8 mixed with a plug-in hybrid electrified setup to give it a lot more power than the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S E Performance and the Audi RS 6 Avant performance.

In the age of downsizing (the AMGs are now infamous for their four-cylinder PHEV setups) and crossovers, SUVs, plus trucks, it will be absolutely impossible to figure out if BMW was right to start sales of not one but two estate variants of its high-performance M machines – the incredible BMW M3 Touring and the upcoming M5 Touring. Hopefully, people will think this big station wagon could be their jack-of-all-trades.
