Despite making the world's third best selling electric car in the form of the i3, BMW is still far from being perceived as a key player in the EV industry.
Munich wants to change all that, especially since it was the first premium carmaker to launch an EV-based sub-brand with both the i3 and the i8. A few good years have passed since then, so BMW wants to soon add a third model to the i sub-brand, with insiders suggesting that we should expect a sedan called the i5.
Until that time comes, the BMW Vision i Dynamics is a preview of an electric sedan, and we can't help but see some pretty large similarities with its future number one rival, the Tesla Model 3.
BMW 3 Series-sized, but with a “Gran Coupe” overall look and a fake kidney grille, the i Dynamics Concept is undoubtedly a looker from just about every angle. That looks can be bad or good, depending on who you ask, but it certainly has presence.
Just like on the BMW i3, there is no visible Hofmeister kink, and the side windows have sort of a Kia “tiger nose grille” feel to them, but overall the concept could have been a lot worse from a design standpoint.
BMW hasn't said much about the electric powertrain that's underneath, but it did let it slip that it offers a range of 600 km (373 miles), a top speed of over 200 km/h (124 mph) and can go from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just four seconds. This last detail makes us think we're looking at an AWD EV with at least two electric motors, but we could be wrong and the I Dynamics is RWD like most BMWs of old.
Naturally, there is no word of how the production model will be named, but considering the concept's four-door coupe looks, we are now more inclined to wait for an i6, not for the i5, which would have been a regular sedan.
Either way, it will be parts of an entire range of electric BMWs, all of which are set to be launched in the upcoming years.
“We have more electrified vehicles on the road than any established competitor and are committed to expanding our activities in the field of electric mobility as part of our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. By 2025 we will be offering 25 models with an electrified drive system – of which 12 will be pure-electric. With the BMW i Vision Dynamics we are showcasing how we envisage future electric mobility between the i3 and i8: a dynamic and progressive, four-door Gran Coupe. We are therefore electrifying the heart of the BMW brand and, at the same time, elevating BMW i into a totally new dimension.” said Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG.
