Speaking at the 96th Annual General Meeting of BMW at Olympiahalle in Munich, chairman of the board of management Harald Kruger made it crystal clear that the Bavarian manufacturer “will be introducing an additional BMW model in the luxury class.” Care to guess what’s what?
It’s too soon to pinpoint the yet-unnamed model, especially when we don’t know whether it will be slotted above the BMW 7 Series. Heck, some people suggest that the German automaker is preparing a longer 7 Series than the Li. I’m not convinced, though.
Instead, I tend to believe that Kruger is talking about the 21st century BMW 8 Series or the oft-rumored BMW 9 Series. Last time we checked, the 9 Series was waiting for a green light. If that’s how it is, then look forward to a stupendously luxurious machine with four doors and lots of power. Then again, it would be foolish to rule the 8 Series out. After all, BMW needs a more luxurious coupe than the 6 Series.
Kruger also confirmed the expansion of the M and i families, as well as the arrival of the BMW X7 in 2018. At the same meeting, Kruger made it clear that the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is bound to start production by the end of 2018. The X family is slated to welcome the X2 in 2017, a compact crossover that will share its underpinnings with the BMW X1. And yes, it will be a sport activity vehicle, not a sport utility vehicle.
All in all, I think that most BMW fans out there would be happy to see their favorite marque building an ultra-luxurious coupe with Pininfarina Gran Lusso-inspired styling cues. If the yet-unnamed model were to arrive in the form of the four-door BMW 9 Series, it would cannibalize the 6 Series Gran Coupe. Oh well, let’s let the passing of time sort this curiosity out. Until that moment comes, the BMW i8 Roadster will drop by.
