As you might already know, premium or luxury imports are a tad more expensive in Japan, so it should come as no surprise that we have no completely new BMW bowing at the 42nd edition of the Tokyo Motor Show, which starts on November 30th for the press and on December 3rd for the general public.
So here are the real headlines for Tokyo 2011:
The German automaker is going to show the ActiveHybrid 5, which was only recently been revealed. It’s a hybrid version of the fresh 5-Series that’s powered by a mix between the 3.0-liter engine from the 535i with an electric motor and eight-speed transmission. The combined output of the powertrain is 340 hp.
“The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 also comes with a globally unique intelligent energy management system, which works in tandem with the navigation system to prepare the car’s drive functions in advance for upcoming road conditions,” BMW says.
The other substantial arrival in Tokyo is BMW’s new the new generation of four-cylinder petrol engines with TwinPower Turbo technology see action not only under the bonnet of the new BMW 1 Series, but also in the BMW X1 xDrive20i.
For the first time, BMW has also decided to bring a six-cylinder diesel with their fresh BluePerformance technology that’s been fitted to the X5 xDrive35d. In addition to a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, its exhaust treatment package also features an AdBlue system with urea injection to reduce NOx levels in the car’s exhaust. This allows you to have your cake and eat it (drive a bigger engined car while not having to pay huge taxes).
