The advancements in technology allowed us to connect out ever-smarter phones to our cars' onboard infotainment systems, providing even internet connectivity inside our luxurious cabins.
This opened a whole new world of oportunities for car manufactures and online music streaming services alike, allowing us to listen to our favorite songs through our smartphones. However, a new step is now being made with new systems.

New cars are now capable of 3G connectivity without the help of a phone. Systems like BMW's iDrive with ConnectedDrive functions now have an integrated sim card and a hard drive to allow you to browse the internet and use its unlimited source of knowledge, without the help of another device.

This, once again, opened new posibilites that were soon exploited. BMW just announced a collaboration with Rara, an online service that allows you to stream and download audio tracks directly on your car's hard-disk, eliminating the need for a smartphone, using the built-in 3G sim card.

Right now, the system is available for cars fitted with the BMW Navigation system Professional, from 1 Series to 7 Series and the X5. However, i3, i8, X1 and X3 models currently lack this option.

The price tag for Rara is currently EUR390 in Germany and varies depending on the European country you live in (it's not available in the US for now). However, you'll get to use the service in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, without no additional roaming fee.

You get all the functions other similar services provide, like favorite a track, download and search from 22 million tracks from major labels and independent artists, including album artwork that is displayed on your iDrive screen or HUD.
