Since the new 4 Series has a diesel version in Europe, the guys from Auto Motor und Sport simply had to compare it to its main rival from Inglostadt, the Audi A5 TDI, one of the most popular Coupe’s out there.
The numbers are clearly in favor of the BMW model, with 184 HP and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque compared to Audi’s 177 HP and similar torque. Whilst the A5 is on par on torque, when it comes to fuel consumption, the test revealed that the Bimmer is the more frugal choice taking up 0.5 liters less for each 100 km (62 mi) inside a busy city, whilst on the highway the difference was even bigger.
However, the Audi is quieter at high speeds and at idle, the diesel engine being less intrusive in the cabin. On the flip side, the 4er has more room in the back and an easier and more ergonomic dash with the iDrive touch controller ruling over the infotainment system.
Dynamic-wise, the Bavarian creation is also the better pick, the new chassis being more agile and easier to control that Audi’s offering. Furthermore, even the steering (that used to be so criticized before) is a lot better in the 420d.
Prices are roughly the same for the two and, whilst the A5 comes as FWD as standard, both of them can be had with all-wheel-drive systems.
Bottom line, there’s little the Audi does better than the BMW. Apart from the quietness on the highway at high speeds, the 420d is the better choice for all the other advantages.
