All us regular folks think that if you have lots of money, fuel consumption isn't a problem. But for the owner of a Bentley Continental GT, the W12 engine in his coupe is a huge burden. So he decided to get rid of it and install the V6 TDI from a Volkswagen Phaeton instead.
The Bentley owner in question is from Luxembourg and says he loves to drive the GT everywhere. The only problem is that it guzzles fuel, and he has to visit the pumps once, sometimes even twice a day.
And so he decided to install a smaller diesel mill in place of the W12 6-liter. So when the odometer reached 200,000 kilometers on the Bentley (124,000 miles), he took it to a company called Dutch Build.
They decided the perfect replacement for the Crewe mill was a 3-liter TDI from a Volkswagen Phaeton. It's a well-founded decision since the Dresden-built VW is based on the D1 platform, which is shared with the Audi A8 and both the Flying Spur and the GT.
Of course, the swap isn't easy to pull off, since the brakes, ABS and all the other electronics need to be recalibrated. Once the project is completed, the Phaeton shell and the W12 engine will be sold off. The Bentley's owner will also specify a brand new interior since after doing so many kilometers in the car, the leather looks tires.
Depending on the model year, the Phaeton's 3-liter diesel makes 225 or 240 PS. Torque levels of up to 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) seem decent until you realize the Bentley weighs more than some SUVs. That's why an engine remap will be carried out, ensuring that the Conty won't feel sluggish.
