Baojun 630 to Premiere in Shanghai

Less than a year after it announced the establishment of a new Chinese brand, American automaker GM is bringing to this week's Shanghai Auto Show the first product in the Baojun lineup, the 630.

Built with American know-how, with Chinese parts and hopefully to be sold at Chinese prices, the first sedan spawned by the new brand will be shown for the first time at an auto show, half a year after the first model rolled out the assembly lines in Liuzhou, Guangxi.

“GM is proud to be introducing our newest brand to the people of China,” said Kevin Wale, president and managing director of the GM China Group. “The Baojun 630 will address the growing demand across the country for affordable personal transportation.”

The new sedan will be sold on the local market complete with a 1.5l DOHC engine, capable of producing 108 hp at 5,800 rpm and maximum torque of 146 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Far from being frugal when it comes to fuel consumption, judging by today's standards, the engine needs however a comfortable amount of fuel to cover 100 km: 6.9 liters.

Probably one of the safest cars produced by a local brand, the model comes equipped with high-strength steel, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, three-point seat belts with early warning restraints, reverse drive radar, child safety seat fasteners and safety locks. Extras like headlights that shut off automatically bring a touch of uniqueness to the local market.

The prices for the model have not been announced, but the word is that the 630 will not be at all cheap. Earlier rumors suggested that the 630 will sell from the equivalent of $7,000.
