Word has it Audi is looking to expand its A4 lineup with a new model that will compete with BMW’s 3 Series Gran Turismo. The new family member is scheduled to arrive in showrooms after the next-generation of A4 vehicles hits the market next year.
According to the German media, the new model will be called Vario and will be based on the extended-wheelbase version of the A4 which is sold in China. The Audi A4 Vario is expected to be launched in 2016.
The same source claims that the future A4 family will become available with a wide range of gasoline and diesel engine choices, including a plug-in hybrid version with a 2.0-liter TFSI and two electric motors that will provide an extra 136 HP. The hybrid’s power will be sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In other related news, the 1.4-liter gasoline version is rumored to feature cylinder deactivation technology. Also, the next-gen A4 sedan will be about 100 kg lighter and will have a longer wheelbase.
