Audi's first R8 model was launch in 2006 and became an instant icon. By the time its life had ended in 2015, there was one party trick left: laser lights for the LMX.
And like the Lamborghini Gallardo Trofeo Stradale, I will always remember the R8 LMX, thinking that it is modern. Could that be why German interior customizer Neidfaktor chose an understated tone of blue for its 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus? Another idea is that they got inspired by the RS2 Avant.
Some say that the R8 doesn't get your blood going like the Huracan. Of course, those same people say the Huracan is uncomfortable, cramped and not as good as the Ferrari. But if there's one thing Audi supercars should have, it's a snazzy interior.
When it came out last year, the V10 Plus followed all the design trends. But for the 2017 fashion season, it needs a blue sweater so as not to look like a total square.
Neidfaktor's updated seat design is probably the best part of the car. It's got a carbon fiber back and a stylish, somewhat retro velvety blue middle with blue accent stitching connecting to the black leather on the sides.
The same quilted blue Alcantara can be seen on the sides of the doors, where carbon fiber has been sprinkled in moderation. The center console and instrument binnacle have been nicely accented.
However, this is by no means a project that's to our full liking. Neidfaktor played with the steering wheel too much, and the blue Alcantara on the gear shifter makes it look cheap. The carbon "horns" mounted to the paddle shifters also turn them into eyesores.
Even seen a carbon fiber coin tray? Neither have we, which is why we'll take a sin off. The base of the seats that would otherwise have been plastic is now covered in leather, which is another appealing touch.
Nobody has been able to cure the ugliness from which the front end of the 2017 R8 suffers. That's why we got excited when Neidfaktor said exterior updates are on their way. Stay tuned but don't expect too much!
