Good news electric supercar drivers, Audi has gone back on its word and is reconsidering the R8 e-tron for production. Why? Because R&D head Wolfgang Durheimer was fired in June and because VW Group's big boss Winterkorn wants tens of electric cars. That's not the official reason though, so don't quote us on that one.
Audi originally planned to put the R8 into production back in 2012 but was delayed indefinitely due to concerns about the limited range of pure electric cars with existing battery technology.
But a new report from Drive magazine suggests the R8 is back on track and could be ready in late 2014. A new battery pack is being developed and will reportedly provide 400 km of range on a charge. By comparison, the 2012 model had only 215 km per charge. Performance figures should remain about the same, meaning 0 to 100 km/h in roughly the same 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h (limited).
