A couple of years ago, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi debuted a new line of concept cars based on an electric powertrain. It all started with the Aicon, and then expanded to comprise two more concepts. At the same venue this year, the fourth concept joins the range.
The car is called AI:TRAIL quattro, and it is a four-seater described as "an electric off-roader for the future." And not just that, but one that can drive itself, without however robbing the driver the pleasure of controlling it on rough terrain.
Measuring 4.14 meters long and 2.15 meters wide, the AI:TRAIL seems like a force you're not to mess with. Its cabin is made of glass and extends all the way to ground level, ensuring all seated inside get the best view possible of the terrain being traversed. Helicopter-style, Audi says.
The concept sits very tall, its underbody moving over the ground at the height of 34 cm (13.4 inches), and it is capable of fording through water that is more than half a meter deep (1.6 feet).
On the interior, there are very few things to remind you this is meant as a car for the future. There are no big screens, for instance, although the AI: TRAIL is fitted with places you can stick a phone or tablet in.
This stripped-down interior comprises only the pedals, a yoke for a steering wheel, a few buttons, and a smartphone attached to the steering column.
For powertrain, the concept uses four electric motors, one on each wheel, with a maximum system output of 429 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.
The battery of the concept can power the motors for a distance of between 400 to 500 km (248 - 310 miles) on the road, or at most 250 km (155 miles) off-road. Most of those miles can be driven autonomously, as the car is rated as a Level 4 self-driving machine. The autonomous system goes offline when the vehicle is off-roading.
