Audi is making a new step for the spreading of the LED technology, as the company recently announced that it will introduce LED headlights as an option for the new A6 saloon.
Customers can choose the new headlights as an alternative to the halogen or bi-xenon lamps. The LED units emit a strong white light, using only 40 watts of electricity each and thus reducing the energy consumption.
“The sophisticated LED units use just four one-chip and five two-chip LEDs to create dipped-beam light, and 24 white LEDs to make up the daytime running lights in each headlight. This keeps power consumption and maintenance down, and assures an excellent service life,” stated the press release.
The new LED lights also come with intelligent systems such as adaptive light control and high-beam assist, which are aimed at offering maximum visibility without bothering other road users.
“The headlight control unit uses a small video camera in the base of the rear view mirror and route data from the optional MMI navigation plus navigation system to anticipate changes in ambient lighting. For example, the cornering light arrangement can be triggered before the car reaches a junction or corner to aid visibility on approach,” explains the press release.
The adaptive light system adapts the light to the driving situation, with different setups for the city, country roads and motorways. As for the high-beam assistant, this automatically varies the range and width of the headlights, choosing between dipped and full beam in order to adapt to the driving situation.
Ticking this box on the optional extras list will set you back GBP 2,710 (EUR 3,230 at the current exchange rates).
