Audi are known for making some of the nicest interiors for company cars around. They also sometimes undercut BMW and Mercedes in terms of pricing because they don’t try to deliver… too many smiles per gallon. For some, this simply is not acceptable, while for others it’s a blessing. Together with details about the planned launch of the all-new $29,900 A3 sedan, their cheapest four-door to date, they also announced plans for four other new cars.
According to the press statement, over the next 16 months, the Germans will “roll out the complete A3 family, including the cabriolet, TDI clean diesel, S3 and A3 e-tron PHEV.”
We don’t think they will necessarily be in that order, especially since we’ve heard the S3 is ready to ship and the A3 TDI is just an A3 saloon with the engine from a Golf. In fact, the only car that’s not coming in 2014 is the e-tron.
What’s an e-tron? Basically it’s Audi’s way of saying “plug in hybrid”. This car is a hatchback and is powered by a 1.4-liter turbo with 150 PS and a powerful electric motor that can power the car on its own. Total output is a very respectable 205 hp, but despite having the power of a 2-liter TFSI, the e-tron only consumes 1.5 l/100km on the European cycle, equivalent to 157 mpg US.
