Unleashed in February 2022, the DBX707 was the fastest production SUV in the world until Ferrari launched the Purosangue in September 2023. According to Aston Martin, the V8-powered 707 hits 310 kilometers per hour (193 miles per hour).
The Prancing Horse says that its V12-powered engineering marvel can go higher than 310 clicks, but in typical fashion, the Italian automaker didn't mention the absolute speed of the Purosangue. On the other hand, Ferrari does sandbag like crazy.
The Enzo is officially rated at over 350 kilometers per hour (217 miles per hour), but there's an old clip on YouTube of an Enzo hitting 370 kph (230 mph) As for the LaFerrari, the Prancing Horse says 350 kph tops even though the KERS-infused hypercar icon has been filmed hitting 372 kph (231 mph).
In other words, the Purosangue is certainly faster than the DBX707. Speaking of which, Aston Martin's utility vehicle is much obliged to reach 303 kph (188 mph) on the clock and 292 kph (181 mph) on the Dragy app with 500 revolutions per minute to go until the redline. Bear in mind the speedo isn't as accurate as the app because Dragy uses the Global Positioning System to estimate speed.
Speedometers are inaccurate by design, especially at higher speeds. Automakers intentionally calibrate them to indicate a lower speed than you're actually going in order to keep you out of trouble and themselves out of very expensive lawsuits. Also remember that the speed on the speedo is affected as the tire expands and contracts. Tire wear should be taken into account as well.
292 kilometers per hour may seem a tad slow for the second-fastest production SUV available to configure today, but step back and take a look at the bigger picture. From the humongous frontal area to the sheer weight of the DBX707, the aforementioned speed is truly amazeballs. Don't forget that Aston Martin also runs a shorter final drive ratio compared to the standard DBX for improved acceleration. More specifically, the numbers are 3.27:1 and 3.07:1, respectively.
Said transmission is based on the 9G-Tronic torque-converter automatic. Officially dubbed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G, the Aston Martin's transmission is a multi-clutch affair that replaces the torque converter with a wet start-off clutch to reduce weight and optimize throttle response.
Under the hood, you'll find the most powerful M177 twin-turbo V8 engine produced by AMG. Not even the DB12 can touch the DBX707 in terms of power and torque. As opposed to 707 ps (697 hp) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) for the 707, the 12 is rated at 680 ps (671 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).
That being said, there are punchier V8s out there. Excluding hypercar-specific exotica like the Hennessey Fury, Nelson Racing Engines-developed V8 of the SSC Tuatara, and Koenigsegg's 5.1-liter engine, the Chrysler Gen 3 HEMI Hellcat in Demon 170 guise comes to mind. In the most powerful muscle car of all time, the 6.2-liter supercharged lump develops a heavy-duty pickup truck-shaming 1,025 ponies and 945 pound-feet (1,281 Nm) on E85 corn brew.
