General George S. Patton was one of the few no-nonsense, brilliant minds of the Second World War. His face was seen back then on the most intense battlefields of the planet, from the campaign in North Africa to the Battle of the Bulge in Europe.
For WWII enthusiasts, anything related to Patton can be of great value. Especially a command car he may or may not have moved about in.
Sitting in the gallery above is a Dodge WC-57, one of the many vehicles from this series (which, after the war ended would evolve into civilian Power Wagon) the carmaker built for the American army during the war. This particular machine was assigned to the 3rd Army, more recently known as the United States Army Central.
But this is not any ordinary WC-57. Word is it has been specifically built for The Old Man and fitted with armor plating and high volume horns and siren, so that the average soldier knew what they’re dealing with.
The command car is for sale at the hands of Worldwide Auctioneers, who will send it under the hammer next week in Indiana. It comes complete with a Browning .30 caliber machine gun, and the original 230ci (3.7-liter) engine under the hood.
The vehicle also offers to whoever will buy it the chance to play general in the car, provided they fit a radio set – the WC does not have one of its own - and for maximum effect, the 4x4 comes with three-star general and 3rd Army HQ pennants attached to its front end.
Worldwide Auctioneers does not give an estimate on how much it hopes to fetch for the vehicle, but considering all the great people it has been around during its life, we expected it not to go cheap. Provided, of course, the right buyer comes along.
