Bringing the new Apple Maps experience to as many users as possible has become a priority for Apple, as the Cupertino-based tech giant is now rolling out a major overhaul with new maps, more details, and 3D navigation.
The iPhone maker started the rollout a few years ago, sticking with a phased approach as it completed data collection in more regions.

Now it looks like a new expansion (number 20) is imminent, as Denmark and Greece are the next in line to receive the new Maps.

Apple surveying new regions is typically a sign that the company is preparing a new Apple Maps update, but the information in Denmark's and Greece's case is currently limited. Most likely, Apple will announce more details in September, as the company will probably use its fall event to confirm a new Apple Maps expansion.

The update looks smaller than other expansions, including only two countries. However, Apple is likely planning further expansions by the end of the year, possibly in Europe.

The new Apple Maps experience is the tech giant's big bet in the race against Google Maps. It includes new maps with rich details, such as crosswalks, sidewalks, traffic lights, stop signs, and Look Around. Apple also brings 3D navigation to some regions on iPhone and CarPlay.

The battle in the navigation space is getting fiercer, and Apple and Google want to spearhead the race, especially as they expand to the automotive industry. Apple will use its updated Maps for a self-driving vehicle it could launch in 2025 or 2026, while Google wants Google Maps to become a must-have service in electric vehicles running Android Automotive.

Google is betting big on Android Automotive in the long term, and the company is working with carmakers to install the operating system in their models. Several big names have adopted the OS, including Volvo, Polestar, and General Motors. The American carmaker also decided to block Android Auto and CarPlay in its future EVs, going all-in on Android Automotive.

Apple will also announce the new-generation CarPlay alongside this Apple Maps update next month. The new CarPlay will require new-generation hardware and will only be available in model year 2024 and later cars. It will use all screens in the cabin, including the instrument cluster, and upgrade the experience with widgets and more vehicle information. The new CarPlay is Apple's response to Android Automotive, and it will put Apple Maps at the forefront of the entire experience behind the wheel.

The first carmakers to adopt the new-generation CarPlay will be revealed at the September event when Apple is expected to provide a detailed look at the new system. Ford is one of the first to adopt CarPlay 2.0 for its 2024 models.
