Angolan Driver to Debut in F1 for Team Lotus?

Angola is the next country which could debut a driver in Formula 1 in the near future. We're talking about the prospect of seeing Portuguese born Angolan driver Ricardo Teixeira in Team Lotus' reserve lineup for the upcoming season of the series.

According to reports, Team Lotus technical chief officer Mike Gascoyne was quite pleased with how Teixeira behaved at the wheel of the Lotus T128 challenger during the Friday running on Valencia's Ricardo Tormo circuit.

Gascoyne said the 26-year old racer “acquitted himself well and that was exactly what we needed him to do.” On the other hand, Teixeira was also impressed with the feeling in the cockpit of an F1 challenger and hinted that he might return to enjoy the same experience soon enough.

I am really pleased I could help out with the filming (of the car) and after my first taste of an F1 car I can't wait to have another go,” said Teixeira after the Valencia test.

Throughout his racing career in Formula 1's feeder series such as GP2 or Formula 2, Teixeira did not score any impressive results, settling for overall performances outside the Top 10. However, what makes him an attractive driver for certain F1 teams nowadays is the fact that he has always enjoyed some strong backing from Angolan national oil company Sonangol.

In case the rumors will turn into reality, it seems that the 2011 F1 season will bring yet another resemblance between Team Lotus and Lotus Renault F1 Team, namely a bunch of reserve drivers. After the Enstone based team recently announced it will benefit from the services of no less than 5 test/reserve racers in 2011, Team Lotus is on the verge of doing the same.

It was recently hinted that Davide Valsecchi and Luiz Razia will almost certainly enjoy some track time in the T128 racer through certain Fridays of the 2011 season, and Karun Chandhok is also close to securing a similar role with the team this season. With Teixeira, Team Lotus will have 4 drivers lined up to show their worths through the upcoming campaign.
