We expected the Mercedes SLS AMG to receive a few new goodies since we’re moving on to the 2012 model year, but Mercedes has offered us much more than that. Among little details such as rims, exterior colors and trimming, the German supercar can now be fitted with AMG’s new Ride Control suspension.
We are talking about adaptive dampers, with the suspension not only being electronically adapted to the road, but also allowing the driver to choose between three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
Here’s how AMG describes the aforementioned settings:
How will you recognise the new technical goodie? a new shock absorber in the AMG drive unit, which is located on the center console.
In case you’re considering gifting your AMG with this optional extra, be prepared to spend EUR2,320 (about $3,200 at the current exchange rates) on it.
Here’s how AMG describes the aforementioned settings:
- Comfort" is recommended for cruising at moderate speeds - e.g. in urban traffic or on motorway sections with speed restrictions. But even on poor, bumpy road surfaces, "Comfort" mode will be the first choice of many SLS AMG drivers by virtue of the softer damper setup.
- In most driving situations, "Sport" mode provides the best compromise between satisfactory suspension comfort, low body movements and high agility.
- Sport plus" is recommended for fast lap times on a race circuit: apart from higher damping forces, this mode has special control algorithms configured for a decidedly sporty driving style on uneven road surfaces.
