Australia and snow – this combination doesn’t seem to match (unless you’re a. from Australia, b. passionate about geography, or c. extra fun at parties). Common lore has it that Australia is a red, scorching desert where every single living organism is deadly enough to single-handedly trigger a mass extinction. Snow is… very cold water and the perfect environment to go skiing. But the rest of the world would be dead wrong; Australia is actually home to one of the coldest regions of the globe – about half of Antarctica belongs to the Aussies.
Yet, as for the Australian continent itself, New South Wales is home to the magnificent Snowy Mountains, the highest mountain range in Australia. With an average of over six feet of snowfall a year (over 1.8 meters), the mountains are the perfect backdrop for snowmen, snowball fights, and a Mercedes-AMG G 63 exclusive model.
Hold on – what’s that got to do with everything? Everything - the Germans launched a special variant of their famous luxury off-roader in six distinct lines. Six themes derived from six ‘elements’ (not really, but that’s what Mercedes-Benz of Australia calls them). A combination of exterior colors and upholstery schemes never before offered on this model down under make up the G 63 Elements Edition.
Each theme nods to the environments the G-Class conquered in the past 45 years ago, since its 1979 world debut. Some optional touch-ups are available in exclusive Manufaktur paints and upholstery color schemes. The limited edition boasts several unique features, like bespoke wheels (how about 22-inch AMG five-spoke forged wheel in matt black finish) or cherry wood floorboards in the trunk.
As if a ‘regular’ Mercedes-AMG G 63 (pardon the lessening, but the Elements are a cut above) wasn’t outstanding enough, the Australians now have the opportunity to project their exclusivity on the road. Literally – the Logo package shoots a ‘G – Stronger Than Time’ text on the ground when the front seat occupants egress or ingress. The ‘G’ logo embossed on the doorknob is a gentle heads-up to what this car is.
The G 63 Elements Edition includes AMG Night Packages, carbon fiber elements, perforated Nappa leather seats with diamond stitching pattern, a Burmester surround sound audio system, a sliding glass sunroof, and interior air ionization, among other creature comforts.
The helm is carbon fiber and DINAMICA microfiber, probably to give a better grip for the Performance Package, which raises the top speed to 240 kph and covers the 4.0-liter V8 twin turbo with a carbon fiber lid. Customers can choose one of the six elements in which their G 63 can take a symbolic dive. WATER has vintage blue non-metallic paintwork and leather interior (either plain black or yacht blue and black).
DESERT is Kalahari gold mango over titanium grey pearl and black leather (plain black is also available, with contrasting topstitching in gold). Then there’s GRAVEL and its classic grey livery over platinum white and black leather. In fact, black is offered for all six Elements customization options, with contrasting stitching or in combination with a second tone.
FOREST is – wouldn’t you know it - deep green with espresso brown and black leather (or just black animal hide with bronze seams). TARMAC has a night black magno exterior hue and Bengal red and black leather. The red stitching is applied to an all-black interior if preferred. And finally, there’s SNOW, a combination of opalite white magnon on the outside and platinum white and black leather for the cabin. Yes, a black-only interior with white thread is available for the snowy theme.
Regardless of the element chosen, the manufacturer's recommended package list price is $28,000 (Australian dollars) over the base G 63, and it’s a limited-numbers offer. Buyers can place orders for their customized G 63 from next Wednesday onward (that’s June 19). The price includes the Goods and Services Tax and the Luxury Car Tax applicable to the standard model. However, all on-road costs and dealer delivery are excluded. For the Drive-Away pricing, Mercedes-Benz of Australia recommends contacting your local sales representative, as fees and costs vary according to local laws and regulations.
