Iconic brand Alfa Romeo could be relaunched with development and assembly facilities outside Italy, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne threatened earlier this week.
“The relaunch of Alfa Romeo will continue for sure,” Marchionne told reporters when asked about potential investments in Italian manufacturing for Alfa Romeo. “Italy should decide if they want it to happen here or not as Fiat and Chrysler have several alternatives.”
"The only weapon we have is to get a slice of the high-end market, which we haven't been able to tackle in the past because of laziness or inability – leaving our German friends alone. We want to disturb the idyllic environment they've created for themselves,” he added.
Marchionne’s outburst is far from becoming an official position, but Fiat’s CEO is hoping that government pressure could speed up the signing of a new contract with the Fiom labour union, after the process suffered court setbacks earlier this year.
Fiat is planning to invest more than $2.5 billion on building eight new Alfa Romeo and six new Maserati vehicles, but still needs government support to achieve its goals.
