Slowly but steadily, automakers operating across the North American market are distancing themselves from the realm of passenger cars in order to gain much-needed leverage in the world of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks.
However, some carmakers still have a nice mix of passenger cars and high riders. One such example would be Kia if they don't continue to kill off nameplates – like the Stinger. Speaking of traditional models, the company still has on offer the Carnival MPV, K5, Forte, and Rio models – all vying for additional recognition in an automotive industry dominated by stuff like the Soul, Seltos, Niro, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, EV6 or the upcoming EV9.
No worries, though, as Kia has decided to keep the compact Forte sedan around for at least one more model year. The nameplate – also dubbed K3, Shuma, or Cerato in other regions and markets – reached its third generation back in 2018 and has already gone through updates on various occasions (2021 in North America, 2023 in China, etc.). Now, though, Kia has only announced the 2024 model year Forte for the United States with mild upgrades.
It also starts a little higher – the 2023 Forte has an MSRP of $19,690, while the 2024 Forte now goes for $19,790 plus $1,125 destination. Meanwhile, the updated compact sedan mostly has tech-savvy upgrades rather than anything else. For example, the GT-Line trim level now has a standard feature called Front Collision Alert (FCA) Fusion. Also, it combines Front Collision Alert-Cyclist (FCA-Cyc), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), Highway Driver Assist (HDA), and Navigation Based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC).
On the other hand, the GT-Line Tech Package is now gone, and the Forte lineup comprises four grades: LX, LXS, GT-Line, and GT. Pricing starts at $19,790 (LX), $20,290 (LXS), $22,290 (GT-Line), and $24,490 or $25,190 for the Forte GT with dual-clutch auto or a six-speed manual transmission, respectively. The model series is available with two engines – a 2.0-liter with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft or a 1.6-liter turbo packing 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft.
Competitors for the Kia Forte include the more expensive 2024 Honda Civic sedan – the LX starts at $23,950, with the 2.0-liter engine good for 158 hp, while the 180-hp EX kicks off at $26,950. Then there's also the 2024 Mazda3 Sedan ($24,170), 2024 Toyota Corolla ($21,900), or the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta, which is closest in terms of pricing with a starting MSRP of $20,655. Meanwhile, its Hyundai Elantra cousin is also around that mark, kicking off at $20,950.
