5,555,555th 5 Series BMW Built

The German carmaker reached an important milestone this month when the 5,555,555th BMW 5 Series car rolled off the assembly line since the series was launched in 1972. The anniversary model is a 525d xDrive Touring, will be donated to the Bavarian Forest National Park, one of the oldest reserves in Germany, bmwblog reported.

The 24,000-acre nature reserve was created in 1970 and hosts about 800,000 visitors per year thanks to such attractions as wild animal enclosures and more than 300 km of hiking trails.

The car will fit well its purposes since it features BMW's xDrive all-wheel technology, has a power output of 145kW (197hp) and an average fuel consumption figure of 6.9 litres per 100km (48 mpg). All that by emitting 184g/km of C02 emissions.

The next wave 5 Series, the GT, recently made its North-American debut at the South Florida International Auto Show last month and is scheduled to go on sale in the US this December. The model’s official media and public presentation was made in March, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

The next generation 5 Series Touring will make its debut in 2011, a few months after the new sedan that is scheduled for release sometimes in 2010. The official unveiling of the 2010 BMW 5 Series Sedan will be made on November 23. The new 5 Series is said to be powered by a 2.5l straight six as an entry level choice, with the top of the range version rumored to be the 4.4l turbocharged V8.

An M version, planned for a later date, is said to pack a 4.4l unit (the one from the X5M and X6M). It develops 555 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque, making the 5er one of the most powerful sedans out there.
