The Japanese automaker Toyota has a massive roster available in America – from the world's best-selling automobile (the Corolla series) to beloved crossovers and popular off-road SUVs or pickup trucks.
It is well known that Toyota has supremacy over some American automotive segments – their Tacoma mid-size pickup truck hasn't been dethroned in years, the RAV4 is a masterclass in sales, and the Camry remains the greatest and most delivered mid-size sedan.
As such, it is no wonder that the Japanese company likes to dip its toes into just about everything. Including safety testing wrongdoings, as it turns out, but that's a developing story for another time. Instead, let us focus on what the carmaker offers to passenger car enthusiasts.
Well, quite a lot, as it turns out. They start with the Corolla triumvirate (sedan, Hatchback, GR Corolla) from as low as $22k in America and then go through the Prius and Prius Prime series, Camry, Mirai, Crown, GR86, and GR Supra models. That's quite a lot, indeed, especially in this CUV, SUV, and truck-intensive climate of late.
However, there are those who feel that Toyota is not selling enough GRs. The rumor mill, for example, thinks that people will finally get the hot GR SUV we have been waiting for so long, and every now and then, we also have a report about a new sports car joining the lineup with a familiar name. Some indicate the MR2 as the suspect, but most have a soft spot for the Celica nameplate, of course.
The imaginative realm of digital car content creators is never too far away when it comes to such rumors and reports, so here's Vince Burlapp (aka vburlapp on social media or burlappcar.com), a prolific virtual artist who loves to dream of all the latest models across the wide-ranging automotive realm, also joining the Toyota GR Celica fray with both his thoughts and a neat digital illustration.
While he acknowledges that some reports talk about a super sporty Celica model with AWD and well over 300 horsepower, that would most likely infringe on the GR Supra and either cannibalize its sales or replace it altogether. Instead, his design project keeps the old Celica recipe of an affordable four-seater and mixes it with electrification by making this idea a Toyota GR Celica Hybrid with help from the Corolla Hybrid's powertrain.
Currently, that one has developed 138 horsepower for a great fuel economy of 53/46 miles per gallon, and it's even available with all-wheel drive. We can easily imagine how the GR engineers could tune it for more power while keeping it affordable at the same time. However, do take all of this with a pinch of salt as nothing is official yet, and Toyota may never go beyond the rumor state with a hypothetical Celica revival.
