The German automaker's Commercial Vehicles division promises the all-new T7 Volkswagen Transporter will be "robust and beautiful," especially in the new PanAmericana guise.
The story of the Volkswagen T-Series is inextricably linked to the company's heritage – the light commercial vehicle slash minivan was originally labeled as Type 2 in relation to its relative position to Type 1, the brand's first automobile. So, the T1 came after the Beetle as Volkswagen's second-ever vehicle model, and it has been in uninterrupted production since late 1949.

Only seven generations have passed since its official introduction, with the Multivan and Transporter taking over since the 1990s for all passenger and commercial-related duties. Thanks to its heritage, the Transporter series is the top-selling van worldwide – with more than 12 million units sold during its history. It hasn't been without competition, though, given its success.

As far as the T7 seventh generation is concerned, the first model that graced the worldwide markets was the 2022 VW Multivan, introduced as the large MPV based on the eternal MQB Evo platform with a range of gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid models and solely offered as a passenger-oriented variant. The commercial version – Transporter – soldiered in T6.1 form until last year.

Now, the German automaker is prepared for a revolutionary new Transporter – its T7 counterpart won't have anything to do with the Multivan. Instead, it is based on the Ford Transit Custom platform thanks to the ongoing commercial vehicle partnership. Just like its sibling, the T7 VW Transporter is expected to offer a big choice in terms of powertrains: diesel, MHEV, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric options will be available.

As for when it comes to market, everyone is expecting it for the second part of 2024, with sales kicking off early next year. Until then, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is playing the waiting and teasing game. The latest apparition also brings the first specific details about the new Transporter along with a first look at the new PanAmericana model that will have an exclusive design, first-ever Indianapolis 19-inch alloy wheels, and numerous all-terrain details.

"Right from the outset and across the generations, the Transporter has been a robust and practical vehicle. And it achieves this in its most beautiful form. That's why it has become an icon. Now, with our seventh Transporter, we have managed to create another vehicle that meets precisely these criteria – a robust vehicle with a highly aesthetic design. It seamlessly follows the classic Bulli DNA, but we have systematically enhanced the design – as is perfectly demonstrated by the new PanAmericana," says Albert Kirzinger, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles' Chief Designer.

The new Transporter, as well as the flagship PanAmericana version, will have a new face with a "striking light design," as even the base versions will use LEDs, and the PanAmericana uses LEDs, including for the taillights. In contrast, the front clusters will use the "top-of-the-line version of the new LED headlights."
