The fourth and current-generation Ford Expedition has been around since late 2017, having undergone several model year changes in the meantime. The most significant changes occurred in time for the 2022 model year, which turned out to be a genuine mid-cycle refresh.
Changes included the revised front-end styling, new wheels, an updated interior, fresh new trims and so on. What’s interesting is that sales for the Expedition have been steady since 2017, and throughout 2024 they’ve already sold 29,443 units, according to reports.

Still, a newly refreshed model would be most welcome, and thankfully that’s exactly what Ford is planning to unveil later this year. Judging from various spy images, we’re looking at a comprehensive overhaul, featuring an all-new front fascia design with a redesigned grille, new headlights, updated and repositioned taillights, and possibly even a split tailgate design.

With regards to the interior, there will be a massive 48.0-inch display spanning the entire width of the upper dashboard (like on the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus), plus a smaller 11.1-inch center display. We also expect the new model to feature the latest connectivity functions, as well as the carmaker's best active safety systems.

In terms of powertrains, the current 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6 should endure, but if we were to speculate, we might also expect to see the Expedition utilize the same 430 horsepower 3.5-liter ‘PowerBoost’ hybrid V6 found in the 2024 F-150 pickup, where it also produces 570 lb-ft of torque.

Now, regarding this rendering, it comes courtesy of Kolesa and it is by far the most accurate 2025 Explorer illustration yet, which makes perfect sense seeing as how they used a bunch of new camouflaged prototypes as inspiration - where the front end is entirely visible, as are the taillights and the overall form of the vehicle, for that matter.

From where I’m standing, this looks like a solid upgrade. It’s not a complete redesign, obviously, meaning Expedition buyers have nothing to fear in terms of having to live with some radical new design language.

I would go as far as to say that if this rendering holds true (and it should), this upcoming 2025 model year SUV should be the best-looking Expedition that Ford has ever produced. It’s more elegant and sharper; something you could even “throw” at the Cadillac Escalade, although that’s what the Lincoln Navigator is for, as far as Ford is concerned.

Still, expect the 2025 Expedition to give all large SUVs a proper headache, meaning models such as the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon, Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada, and even the likes of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

Speaking of expectations, Cadillac Escalade buyers will likely stay put, as will those who are in the market for a Range Rover or a BMW X7. It’s hard to talk premium car buyers into leveling down.
