Stellantis finished 2023 with a BEV market share of 14.2 percent in Europe, making it a big player in the battery-electric vehicle business. However, in order to maintain this position, the group formed by the merger of PSA and FCA needs to keep its BEV lineup as fresh as possible.
Enter the 2025 Citroen e-C4 X, which is believed to launch in late 2024 with little in the way of changes from the outgoing model. Before going any further, it should be mentioned that e-C4 X stands for C4 X with electric oomph rather than PSA's 1.2L turbo three-pot gasser or 1.5L turbo four-pot diesel.

Revealed with much pomp in June 2022, the C4 X is best described as a coupe-styled crossover with four doors rather than the C4's five. Adding to the confusion, the C4 is a coupe SUV as well. Based on the platform that also underpins the subcompact Opel Corsa, Jeep Avenger, and Lancia Ypsilon, the C4 X received a technical update a year ago.

Back in May 2023, the French automaker gifted the e-C4 X with a slightly larger high-voltage battery for improved range. Think 17 percent more driving range, as in 420 kilometers (261 miles) in the WLTP. The zero-emission brother of the C4 X also received a slightly punchier electric motor that puts out 20 more horsepower. More specifically, the front-drive crossover develops a respectable 154 horsepower and 192 pound-feet (260 Nm).

Given the aforementioned update, why is Citroen testing a camouflaged e-C4 X in Germany? As expected, the French marque prepares a few minor stylistic revisions for the increasingly popular electric utility vehicle. Up front, the slim daytime running lights of the 2024 model have been replaced by larger DRLs to make the e-C4 X and its combustion-engined brother stand out more.

The front bumper has been tweaked as well, but alas, the lack of camouflage on the rear bumper suggests no changes whatsoever. The rear lights have been redesigned as well, and the camouflage wrap on the lower part of the doors also hints at a small nip and tuck for the so-called Airbumps.

Airbump is Citroen's way of saying air-filled thermoplastic polyurethane capsule. The cladding-like Airbump panels have a stylistic value, of course, but Airbumps were actually designed to protect the paintwork on the vehicle's doors.

The German-plated vehicle doesn't feature any interior camouflage at all. Zooming in on the pictures captured by the carparazzi, you'll see a familiar infotainment system and instrument cluster. Be that as it may, prospective customers might be in for a redesigned center console and more standard equipment across the board.

At press time, Citroen wants €27,410 at the very least for the C4 X in You specification with the 1.2-liter turbo gas engine. At the other end of the spectrum, the e-C4 X E-Series with the larger of two battery packs and the more powerful of two electric motors will set you back €45,700 in France. Together with the facelifted C4 X and e-C4 X, word has it that Citroen will reveal the facelifted C4 and e-C4 at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024.
