The refreshed Tesla Model 3 Performance packs more punch than the previous model. However, it takes a direct comparison to understand the difference, and the best one is on the drag strip. Guys at Model 3 Challenge have pitted the 2024 Model 3 Performance against a 2021 model, showing how far apart the two cars are.
The refreshed Tesla Model 3 Performance only started deliveries last month, but it's already become a public favorite. There really aren't many competitors for the kind of performance the new sports sedan delivers, especially in its price bracket. However, many wondered whether upgrading to the new model is worth it if you already have a Model 3 Performance.

Thanks to all the Highland changes, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is already a great improvement. This goes from the design changes, focusing on improving aerodynamics, to the performance upgrades. Tesla redesigned the front spoiler and the rear diffuser, boosting efficiency and increasing stability at high speeds.

The suspension got an important upgrade, thanks to the stiffer chassis and the use of adaptive dampers. Tesla opted for a staggered wheel setup for the first time, giving the Model 3 Performance better grip during acceleration. Lastly, the Model 3 Highland Performance features an upgraded brake system to handle higher thermal load.

All these changes were necessary to cope with the increased power provided by the upgraded drive units. Thanks to a new rear motor, the 2024 Model 3 Performance develops 510 horsepower, making it the most powerful Model 3 in history. Sadly, this is not true for the Model 3 Performance build at Giga Shanghai, sold in Canada, among other markets. The Canadians are punished with a 460-horsepower model because the battery supplied by LG cannot accommodate a more powerful setup.

Tesla says the new Model 3 Performance can reach 60 mph (97 kph) from a standstill in 2.9 seconds (with rollout subtracted). This is 0.2 seconds faster than the previous Model 3 Performance, which doesn't seem much. However, this couldn't be further from the truth, as seen in the video below. Pitted against the 2021 Model 3 Performance, the refreshed model left it far behind.

The test was done by folks at Model 3 Challenge (@Model3Challenge) with an almost full battery (85% SoC) and a pack temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). During the test, the refreshed model reached the 60 mph (97 kph) mark in 2.97 seconds, compared to the 3.25 seconds of the 2021 model. The 2024 M3P completed the quarter-mile in 10.96 seconds with a top speed of 123.84 mph (199.30 kph). The slower 2021 M3P needed 11.52 seconds and reached only 115.99 mph (186.67 kph).

The team went even further and put the cars on a scale. Surprisingly, the 2024 Model 3 Performance is a bit lighter, at 4,049 lbs. (1,837 kg) versus 4,059 lbs. (1,841 kg) the 2021 model. This is even more impressive, considering the upgraded equipment. Only the 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance was lighter, at 4,046 lbs. (1,835 kg).
