Any type of extended travel will always involve a degree of compromising, which will vary according to the size and the price of the vehicle you'll be traveling in. It's not wise to dream of hitting the road with all the creature comforts of your home in a fraction of the footprint, but that's not to say all dreaming is bad for you.
Little Guy Trailers, a builder with almost three decades of experience in travel trailers and a very strong presence on the North American market over the past five years, is all about dreaming. As the company's name hints, they're all about dreaming big with as compact a footprint as possible, to be more exact.

Little Guy Trailers makes small towables inspired by the travel trailers of yesteryear but infused with all the modern comforts of today. Their towables are lightweight and compact, with a retro-looking design that masks modern features, convenience, low maintenance, and ease of use. They're sometimes described as tiny homes on wheels, but in reality, they're oversize teardrops that live much larger than their very small footprint.

The Micro Max model is a solid example in this sense.

Introduced in 2022 as the smaller version of the already small Mini Max, it lives up to its name but with an incredible twist. Indeed, its micro dimensions easily mark it as highly garageable and towable, but its clever layout and construction allow it to live much larger than the available footprint. In fact, it lives so much larger that it's been compared to a tiny home on wheels.

The comparison is a generous one, to be sure. Sitting on a single-axle chassis, the Micro Max is no "home" in the basic sense, but it comes close. It's also one of the few travel trailers of this size that can boast the ability to offer seating for as many as six people or sleeping for three adults in two beds, a full kitchen, a restroom arrangement with the CT plan, standing height in the kitchen, and the ability to park in a home garage with the standard wheel package.

The Micro Max presents as an all-in-one package, and it might be just that if these are all things that you're looking for in a compact travel trailer. The 2024 model, presented in the Rough Rider package in the video below, adds higher clearance (about 10 inches/25.4 cm) for a total height of 7.2 feet (220 cm).

The interior height remains unchanged from the standard model: 5.9 feet (175 cm) in the kitchen area, thanks to a fiberglass tub insert that could be replaced in case of damage during rougher travels. This section of the dropped floor does double duty, allowing standing height and serving as a space divider between the two main areas inside the cabin. That last part is a phrase you won't see that often in talks about travel trailers.

The Micro Max is 15.11 feet (485 cm) long, 6.8 feet (203 cm) wide, and tips the scales at 1,860 lbs (844 kg). It comes with an aluminum frame and composite shell to have as low a weight as possible while ensuring durability and weather resistance. The dropped-floor design is inspired by the Serro Scotty Sportsman trailer, a '50s towable credited with introducing this element on the U.S. market.

In fact, Little Guy Trailers pulled a Sportsman trailer from storage to study the construction, using it as a "blueprint" for their Micro Max. Their reasoning is that, if you have something that worked for decades and for thousands of travelers, you should use it a model for your own modern product.

The cabin of the Micro Max is divided in two, with the kitchen in the middle. On the right hand side, you have the smaller dinette area that converts into a single bed. In the CT plan, one of the benches is replaced by a piece of furniture that hides the cassette toilet and doubles as a makeshift restroom. The 2024 model introduces a separate cubby under the bench in the larger dinette to hold the porta-potty.

On the left side is the larger dinette, which converts into a queen bed at night. The centrally-located kitchen offers a two-burner gas stove, a 65-liter (2.3 cu-ft) fridge, a deep sink with drainers and cutting board, and enough cabinets to hold all your stuff. You get additional storage under the bed and in the divider left of the entrance, which also holds the microwave and the command center.

With the standard layout with double dinettes or double beds, the Micro Max allows you to find a permanent configuration that includes a bed and dining area without you having to move furniture around every day. It also creates the basic setup for entertaining, seating as many as six adults or sleeping three in perfect comfort.

Like the original model, the Micro Max still comes with hardwood maple cabinets with dovetail joints, guaranteed for wear and tear but also to add some oomph and elegance to your living space. Living space can expand outside by means of a side railing compatible with aftermarket products like tents and awnings, and features like mounts for the TV and a table, a gas line for the grill, and an outdoor shower with hot water.

The Micro Max packs a 12-gallon (45.2-liter) tank for fresh water and an 8.5-gallon (32.2-liter) one for gray, a Dometic water heater, Frigidair Exaust air conditioning and Seaflo fan, and a 16,000 BTU propane furnace. It's not exactly suitable for year-round travel, but it is 3.5-season ready, according to Little Guy.

Features also include a 100W solar panel on the fiberglass one-piece roof, trickle-charging the battery at all times, Euro-style dual-pane acrylic windows with embedded screens and privacy blinds, and Azdel composite panels on the walls. Little Guy Trailers says that the Micro Max isn't just lightweight and garageable but also guaranteed to remain rust and mold-free for an entire lifetime of use.

A Little Guy Micro Max CT Base for the 2024 model-year starts at $25,000.
