As promised, Jeep now has a Wagoneer S in the lineup, all-electric but with 4xe capability, "impressive performance," and sleek looks, plus the latest technologies.
Fresh off the reports citing Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares confirming that Jeep will soon launch a $25k electric crossover in the US, beating Tesla to the punch, they American specialty automaker has announced now one but two all-electric battery-powered vehicles. Nope, none of them is the $25k affordable holy grail, as even the Jeep Avenger it sells in Europe is costlier at around 35,000 euros ($38k).
Also, the off-road EV is only a concept for now – the Jeep Wagoneer S Trailhawk has a more rugged appearance and wants to take the legendary off-road capability into the all-electric era with stuff like a new Rock mode and driver-selectable electronic rear axle locker to the enhanced Selec-Terrain system. However, the real star of the Jeep EV show is the promised all-new, first-ever, all-electric 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S.
As the electric Jeep Avenger is a regional affair, the Wagoneer S is now the brand's first global battery-powered SUV. However, Jeep makes sure to honor its North American legacy, and the United States plus Canada will get it first – at home, it will land in nationwide dealerships starting later this year during the fall season with the Wagoneer S Launch Edition costing $71,995 (including destination).
A quick look over at camp Tesla reveals Stellantis has finally done its homework – an all-wheel drive Model X costs from $77,990 with 335 miles of range, 149-mph top speed, and 3.8 seconds to 60 mph. Meanwhile, Jeep talks of delivering "exhilarating performance" with 600 horsepower, 617 lb.-ft. of torque, "lightning-quick" zero to 60 mph (96 kph) in 3.4 seconds, and a range of more than 300 miles on a charge. However, if you compare it to the $51,490 Model Y Performance, things get murky, and fast: 2790mile range, 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and 155-mph top speed. So, the Wagoneer S is kind of an in-betweener.
Additionally, Jeep claims the 400-volt 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack can be fast-charged at DC stations from 20 to 80% in 23 minutes. So, it's going to be interesting to see what customers choose between them and the upcoming Lucid Gravity or the announced Range Rover EV, for example. Anyway, the Jeep Wagoneer S debuts first with the Launch Edition packing dark touches, a "reimagined seven-slot illuminated grille," 20-inch wheels, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof among the standard amenities.
Inside, there's 45 inches "of usable screen space – best-in-class among EVs," complete with a front passenger screen, premium heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and a "segment-exclusive" 19-speaker, 1,200-watt McIntosh audio system. Not only that, but the SUV gets all-wheel drive through the dual-motor setup with the STLA large platform underneath the sleek body and the Selec-Terrain traction management system featuring Auto, Sport, Eco, Snow, and Sand modes. Safety is also impressive – the company touts a combination of more than 170 standard safety and security features like Active Driving Assist, Intersection Collision Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, and a Surround View camera.
