If you’re one of the millions of Volkswagen Golf fans out there, you’re probably still dreaming about a modern version of the Golf Country.
And while the German carmaker doesn’t seem to be willing to bring back this model, choosing to focus more on the “traditional” crossover and SUV lineup, someone has created this new-generation iteration of the car that so many people want to see happening.
The so-called 2022 Volkswagen Golf Country is a set of renderings created by artist Kleber Silva and shared on Behance a few days ago, imagining a mix of various Volkswagen models that would eventually help create a modern crossover version of the Golf.
While at first glance this Volkswagen mix could indeed provide us with a Golf crossover, this is a market that Volkswagen is already committed to with other models, so there’s only a small chance to ever see this getting the go-ahead.
And if you think you’ve heard of this modern version of the Golf Country before, it’s because others have envisioned it too, imagining a more rugged version of the iconic Golf. But this new rendering focuses more on a mix of parts from multiple Volkswagen models rather than on the Golf exclusively, an approach that Volkswagen itself is very unlikely to use should such a project ever come to the drawing board.
The original Golf Country, however, which was part of the Golf Mk2 generation, boasted a look that suggested its purpose from the very beginning. With an all-wheel-drive system, an improved ground clearance, bullbars, and a skid plate to protect the engine, the Golf Country was clearly supposed to go off-road, something that’s not really recommended for today’s crossovers.
If anything, a new-generation Volkswagen Golf Country would rather cannibalize the carmaker’s crossover lineup, so given the company’s long-term plans, it’s better not to hold your breath for such a model to show up anytime soon.
