Taking a look through the U.S. lineup, Subaru has two outdated models that haven’t made the switch to all-new underpinnings. These are the WRX series and BRZ, the only cars that Subaru developed exclusively for sporting credentials.
Toyota and Subaru both confirmed the BRZ and 86 will soldier on for another generation, boxer engine and all that jazz, but little is known about the successor of the WRX. It’s certain that Subaru is developing the rally-breed sedan behind closed doors as we speak, and there’s a different powerplant in the pipeline as well.
The WRX STI for the United States of America relies on the EJ25 turbocharged boxer, a 2.5-liter engine that puts out 341 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque at the crankshaft of the STI S209 special edition. You know, the Subaru with the mind-boggling sticker price of $63,995 including destination charge.
Over in Japan, WRX STI enthusiasts are treated with the EJ20 Final Edition for the 2020 model year. This incarnation marks the end of the 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer in the Land of the Rising Sun, an engine that traces its roots back to 1989. The WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show makes do with only 304 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and that’s not enough if you remember what Mercedes-AMG does with 2.0 liters of displacement.
The 1.8-liter turbocharged boxer with direct-injection technology from the all-new Levorg could serve as the basis for the next generation of the WRX STI, but at the same time, the 2.4-liter FA24 in the Ascent, Legacy, and Outback is a possibility. There’s talk that Subaru could electrify the sports sedan to improve performance and efficiency, but thus far, the rumors have yet to be confirmed.
The EJ20 Final Edition costs 4,110,000 yen before options, nearly $38,000 at the current exchange rates. Customers can place an order starting on December 23rd, and only 555 examples of the breed will ever be offered in Japan.
555 is an homage to the State Express 555 sponsorship from the 1990s, the livery that brought tons of success to Colin McRae and Subaru in the World Rally Championship.
555 is a cigarette brand owned by British American Tobacco since 1925, introduced in the United Kingdom by the Ardath Tobacco Company in 1896.
