Back in April 2019, an surprise vehicle showed up on the Nürburgring and shattered the record for a front-wheel-drive production car, setting the new bar at 07:40.100 minutes. That car, the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, was confirmed this week for limited production by the French.
The Megane RS Trophy-R is a souped-up version of the Megane RS Trophy. Using some clever engineering and tweaking, the French managed to create “the most high-performance production car” they ever sold.
The car uses the same engine as the regular Trophy, a 1.8-liter unit. It develops 300 bhp and 400 Nm of torque and is controlled by means of a 6-speed manual transmission.
The car can reach 100 kph in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 262 kph (163 mph).
Compared to the Trophy though, the R is a lot lighter. It weighs 130 kg less, to be more exact, thanks to a severe diet. The car uses no rear seat, it can be fitted with carbon wheel rims and comes with a lightweight Akrapovi titanium exhaust line.
The suspension assembly of the car has been severely upgraded as well, and it now uses a lighter rear H axle, and adjustable Öhlins shock-absorbers. Power is sent to the track via Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires used solely by Renault Sport, while stopping power can be ensured with optional Brembo carbon-ceramic discs.
To be able to keep to the track while racing at high speeds, some tweaks have been made to the aerodynamics as well. The Trophy-R uses a lot of modified elements, including fairings and carbon diffuser for better airflow, and air intake and brake scoop for improved thermal control.
The 2020 Renault Megane RS Trophy-R will go on sale by the end of this year. Renault will manufacture only 500 units of it. Prices have not been announced, but we can take the RS Trophy as a starting point, and that one starts at €44,100.
