It’s one of the best electric vehicles out there, but Hyundai isn’t done with the Kona Electric. For the 2020 model year, the subcompact crossover receives an 11-kW charger to strengthen the nameplate’s appeal.
But the three-phase AC charger is one thing. Next up, the 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric is much obliged to level up to 10.25 inches for the touchscreen infotainment system. The Blue Link connected car service and smartphone app also comes with more features than ever, and the rear passengers are now treated to heated seats on the highest trim level.
Also on the technological front, eCall becomes standard in the Kona Electric. This service can be accessed manually at the touch of a button. In the case of a more serious incident that involves the deployment of the airbag, eCall contacts the emergency services automatically.
“With emission-free, connected vehicles such as the Kona Electric, Hyundai is not only one of the pioneers for clean mobility, but is also striving constantly to meet the demands of the growing number of consumers for more eco-friendly cars,” declared Thomas A. Schmid, chief operating officer at the automaker’s European division.
Hyundai hasn’t changed the battery options nor did the engineers squeeze out more power from the front-mounted electric motor. In other words, the range-topping Kona Electric can’t do better than 64 kWh and 204 PS (201 horsepower). Under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure, the subcompact crossover can be driven up to 449 kilometers before recharging. As for the U.S. version of the Kona Electric, that’s rated at 258 miles of range.
The Kona Electric joins the Ioniq family whereas the Nexo sits at the top of the eco-friendly lineup. Kia leveraged on the know-how of Hyundai in terms of electric vehicles, but more are in the pipeline as a result of a partnership with Rimac Automobili.
Both Hyundai and Kia decided to invest a handful of millions into Rimac, and as a result of this participation, a mid-ship electric sports car and an FCV will be developed with the help of the Croatian company. That’s right; Hyundai is going mid-engine!
