Chevrolet might have taken the veil off the 2020 Silverado HD, but GMC isn't far behind. Fret not; the carparazzi spied the 2020 Sierra HD in Denali trim and Crew Cab configuration!
Caught cruising in Detroit Motor City, the heavy-duty pickup appears to be the 2500. Also visible is the Bedstep system, making it easier to access the bed while pulling a fifth-wheel trailer.
Even though it’s bigger than the Sierra 1500, the Sierra HD borrows a lot of the light-duty pickup’s styling. The cabin design shouldn’t make a discordant note either, featuring all the creature comforts and technological jibber-jabber that General Motors can throw at it.
The MultiPro six-way tailgate is also featured, but in the long run, this is nothing more than a novelty item. More to the point, it’s a tailgate within a tailgate within a tailgate, defeating the purpose of what heavy-duty pickup customers want from such an essential part of their trucks.
MultiPro side steps, LED lighting, and an underbody-mounted spare wheel can also be seen on this particular prototype. The side mirrors appear to be the size of an iPad, and if you look closely, the eight-nut wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler all-season, all-terrain tires with DuPont Kevlar in their construction for ruggedness.
We’re expecting GMC to premiere this truck early next year during the auto show season, maybe even at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. Pricing shouldn’t differ too much from the current generation, which starts at $38,300 for the 2019 model year. The 3500 HD is capable of towing up to 23,100 pounds while maximum payload is rated at 6,112 pounds.
Like the Silverado HD, the Sierra HD will introduce “an all-new gasoline engine with direct injection mated to a six-speed transmission.” Customers who want more torque can get the “Duramax Turbo Diesel V8, which delivers 910 pound-feet through an all-new Allison 10-speed transmission.”
The Sierra HD will be produced at the Flint Assembly plant in Michigan alongside the Silverado HD. Most recently, General Motors invested $79 million into a new trim shop.
